“The Hug Club” is a personal essay by Andrea about body changes, self-image, and the importance of feeling understood during difficult transitions. She describes going into Mixology looking for what she called “fat pants,” only for the employee helping her to gently reframe them as “comfy pants.” That small interaction becomes meaningful because her body has changed through breast cancer, a double mastectomy, reconstruction, medication, hormones, and other factors outside of her control.

She reflects on how Mixology has unexpectedly been part of several stages of her journey—from shopping for comfortable clothes around surgeries to later finding pieces that made her feel confident in her post-reconstruction body. On this visit, she simply wanted clothes that made her feel stylish and comfortable without turning the fitting room into another place to judge herself. The salesperson listened, offered honest advice, and helped her dress the body she has now rather than making her feel like she needed to change first.

The essay’s title comes from a “Hug Club” bag she sees in the store. She realizes that the shopping experience itself felt like a kind of hug because she felt cared for and understood. That moment inspires the idea of a real “Hug Club”: a space where women could openly talk about changing bodies, aging, illness, menopause, pregnancy, stress, grief, relationships, careers, and other life transitions without feeling pressure to fix everything.

The bigger takeaway is that we often treat our bodies as the problem when clothes no longer fit, when really clothes are supposed to fit our bodies—not the other way around. Andrea takes that idea beyond clothing, reflecting on how old expectations, roles, and versions of ourselves may no longer fit either.

For Mixology, the story is a meaningful example of how the in-store experience can become much more than a transaction. A thoughtful interaction helped her feel comfortable, heard, and more like herself again.
